About IRCTC PNR Status
PNR Number is an unique ten-digit number assigned by Indian Railways CRIS system when a booking is made. PNR is defined as Passenger Name Record. It is the number by which each railway ticket booking is identified. By referring to this number, one can know the current PNR status of your Railway booking.
When we book railway tickets online (IRCTC website) or through the Railway reservation counter, the booking can be in the Confirmed status or the RAC list or Waiting List depending on the vacancy of berths and quota allotted to the particular station. At the same time, each booking is assigned a unique number 10-digit number. One can know the current status of Railway booking such as whether the ticket is Confirmed or Wailisted, Train number, Date of journey, class of journey, No of passengers and other details by referring to this Number.
PNR Status Enquiry is essential before boarding the train. Because, if your reservation is still in the Waiting list after chart preparation you will be not be allowed to board the train. Your booking status must either be confirmed or placed in the RAC list (Reservation against cancellation).Generally, Indian Railways Train Reservation charts are prepared about 4 hours before the commencement of journey at the origin station.
After preparation of charts, a few bookings in the waiting list or in the RAC list might be allotted with confirmed status. Therefore, the PNR Number serves as a very useful tool in knowing the Berth /Seat Numbers allotted and the coach number along with your train PNR Status, by which one can easily embark the train without confusion.
